With a long time presence in the Smith Family, Larry Brooks continues to foster our dedication to crafting premium and ultra-premium wines with his extensive industry experience. What started out as buying grapes from Rich decades ago continues as a solid relationship that is stronger than ever.
Larry’s breadth of knowledge spans almost 40 years, encompassing vineyard management, winemaking, operations and consulting – but at the heart of his work he’s a winemaker’s winemaker. He considers everything from soil to consumer, and while he’s comfortable wearing a suit to a board meeting, he thrives when working hands on in the vines and wines. His profound skill with fine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is one of the reasons we’re able to create the quality and stylish wines Smith Family is known for.
Justin is the third generation vintner in our family. Though he grew up around wine, Justin charted his career path independently. He started at wineries in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, as he says, “pulling hoses and cleaning tanks,” and worked his way up through the cellar. He returned to Monterey County to work with family while continuing to learn the wine business and hone his craft.
His laid-back yet confident approach to life carries through to his winemaking style and seamless ability to work with our winery crew. Justin definitely inherited our family’s hard-working style and entrepreneurial spirit—he is the creator of our award-winning Irie wines—and he now works in tandem with Larry on the many critical aspects that support our winemaking program.
